NVA 1 Understanding and applying media techniques and processes. 

Students will select the optimium medium, technique or process for expressing the artistic intent of their work.

 

NVA 2 knowledge of functions and structures. 

Students will create works of art that employ basic color theory.

 

NVA4 Understanding the visual arts in relation to history and culture

Students will analyze how a work of art may have been influenced by the factors of time and place.

 

NVA 5 Students will reflect upon the successes and challenges of their work and note areas for growth and improvement. 

Students will maintain an art portfolio that demonstrates artistic process and self reflection.

 

Expressive Portraits

 

      After participating in a series of lessons involving the shadow shapes of the human face, and experimenting with a vairiety of materials and art styles, students were asked to create an original expressive portrait choosing the media that they felt best helped to express their ideas.

             Students were introduced to the technique of monoprinting. The emphasis of the lesson was on  looking for "shadow shapes" to describe the human face rather than outline.

     After viewing Fauvist paintings students were again asked to look for the shadow shapes in the human face. This time they were instructed to experiment with oil pastels using color expressively.
